Guest Speaker at The International Center of Photography
I was recently invited to be a guest speaker at The International Center of Photography, for their “Art of Fashion Photography” class. It was an incredible, immersive experience. I’m grateful to have had a setting for such open creative communication with eager students, as we looked at over a hundred of my images. I tried to cover all of the bases, while fitting it into a 1.5 hour lecture.
I started off speaking about me college days, and how my interested of photography was rooted. I also spoke about the perks of studying both photography and graphic design. I mentioned the importance of molding your aesthetic. And from there, you can start branding yourself as a photographer. We spoke openly about branding and aesthetic, and how to represent yourself as a photographer.
I showed the students many portfolios: celebrity portraits, menswear, beauty, fashion, on-location, still life, street style, etc.
I also showed the class my published stories and editorials, and explained the process from lighting and shooting, all the way to the final publishing. I familiarized them with the specific role of everyone involved on the team to make the magic happen.
It was a pleasure to sit and talk about photography for an hour and a half, and I definitely hope I can do it again soon!
Musée Magazine followed me around for a fun day to make this video. They filmed a photoshoot of mine, came to my exhibition/party, and we talked about my work too! Great day! Come back soon, Musée!
"Ask A Local", published in Modern Luxury’s Front Desk NY Magazine, March - April 2014 issue. I shot the street style for the story! Ventured around Soho with Heather Corcoran, and found some great people to photograph and ask them about their upcoming spring wardrobes.
You can also see it here!
Musée Magazine did a video segment on me, as “A Day in the Life of a Photographer”, where they filmed me shooting a beauty editorial, interviewed me about my visions/goals/work, and also filmed my exhibition/party the same day. @museemagazine #museemagazine #mattmonath #mattmonathphoto #mattmonathphotography #behindthescenes #editorial

Shoot with Rita Ora
We laughed, we cried, we partied, we bullshat.
Well, this post has been long overdue, especially because this shoot was one of my favorites. This brief shoot with Rita Ora yielded images I’m damn proud of. I had 30 minutes to capture the essence of Rita Ora in three different settings, for iHeartRadio.
I knew my time with Rita would be limited, so I arrived hours earlier than she was scheduled to pose for me to prep three separate sets. I had two facing each other, while the third waited for us downstairs at the stage door for the iHeartRadio Theater.
The perfect coincidence of the day: my blue and pink lighting matching Rita’s new accidentally permanent blue and pink hair. SCORE. She walked in and we had a laugh when she saw the setup.
Rita jumped right into set, giving me lots of great options. Fun, elegant, sexy… she had all the tricks. I think at some point the words, “you’re a tiger, baby” slipped out of my mouth. That happens sometimes; I can’t help but get a kick out of mocking ridiculous abstract directing.
So that tiger then planted herself in front of the opposing set, which read RITA in a variety of scribbles and doodles. It shall forever be known as the Rita wall! #RitaWall? The Rita wall was a fun prop to make, and a fun prop to use. I channeled the idea of her being such an iconic woman today. She gave me perfect up-close faces, and that was when I really noticed the aura of the Ora. (Yes! I managed to fit that in here somewhere!)
Once we escaped the sharpie fumes, we took a trip down to the stage door where iHeartRadio captures a moment with each of their artists. “Get a shot of me from behind,” she joked as the elevator took us to the ground level. See b&w shots below for that gem of a memory.
At the stage door, my red star tambourine got a new life in Rita’s hands. I bet it enjoyed its vacation from sitting in a corner in my studio for eventual jam sessions. You’ve made it to the big leagues, little tambourine! Rita twirled and danced with it, but the shot below is what made the cut because of Rita’s adorable goofiness.
Some behind the scenes shots, below!
After the shoot, Rita gave a kick-ass performance, which I also photographed. I’ve mastered the art of dancing/shooting at the same time. Oh, and singing badly on top of that. Yep… talent.
'Til next time, Rita. See you at the #RitaWall.
Come out to The DL on February 28th to see my work on their multiple big flat-screens, on rotation all night! The DL is an awesome tropical-themed party spot, with a great mix of cozy corners and open dance space. You can come catch the happy hour drink specials until 8PM, and then stay late for mingling and dancing on their top floor, which also has an outdoor space to get some fresh air. You can also grab food until 9PM if you’re in the mood for a bite!
I will have some bottle-service fun for my close guests too.
There will also be some super fun pictures taken!
By saying you’re there for my event, you’ll get free entry at the door, rather than having to pay an entrance fee. All are welcome, so feel free to spread the word and invite your friends!
Looking forward to seeing you all there, and celebrating my art!
